OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson women's volleyball team is receiving votes in the AVCA Division III Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll after winning the Commonwealth Conference and making it to the second round of the 2012 NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship a season ago.
The Mustangs have made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship, earning their first-ever NCAA tournament win with a 25-11, 25-14, 25-15 win over Neumann on November 9, 2012.
Stevenson will play two top-25 teams and a third who is receiving votes. The team will play No. 5 Christopher Newport at Marymount (Va.) on November 2 and No. 16 Eastern on the road in a MAC Crossover on October 5. The Mustangs also play Johns Hopkins, who is ranked two points above them, away on September 7 and again at home on September 24.
The team returns two AVCA Division III All-America Honorable Mention selections in senior Jessica Gieselman (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and junior Samantha Perillo (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends). Gieselman, a two-time AVCA Division III All-American and the 2013 ECAC Division III South Player of the Year, was also named the 2013 Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year. Meanwhile sophomore Imani Hudson (Burke, Va./Thomas Edison) was named the 2013 Commonwealth Conference and ECAC Division III South Rookie of the Year.
Stevenson opens its season on the road at the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic on Friday, August 30 against Rutgers-Camden beginning at 5:00 p.m.
