Strong Hitting Propels Mustangs Past Bobcats

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson University swept a non-conference women's volleyball contest from Frostburg State Wednesday evening at Owings Mills Gymnasium.  Set scores were 25-11, 25-21, 25-16.

  • Stevenson (13-11) hit .600 in the first set, racking up 19 kills and recording just one attack error on 30 swings.
  • The Mustangs jumped out to a 9-2 lead.
  • Frostburg (7-18) pulled within four, 11-7, but a 6-1 Mustang run capped by a kill by Moriah Savage put the hosts up 17-8.
  • A Savage kill closed out the first set.

  • The second set featured 17 ties and neither team leading by more than two until a final 5-0 run by Stevenson.
  • The Mustangs trailed 21-20 when a kill by Mackenzie Blevins tied things, then a Bobcat attack error put Stevenson up one.
  • Stevenson's final three points came on a Darian Hileman service ace, a Frostburg attack error, and a block by Blevins and Chelsea Ireland.
  • Both teams had 13 kills and four errors in the set, with the Bobcats notching two fewer attempts for a .281 hitting percentage, while Stevenson hit .265.

  • The hosts jumped out to an early 8-3 lead.
  • Leading 9-6, Stevenson reeled off six straight points to build a 15-6 lead.  Hileman served three aces during the run.
  • Stevenson took its largest lead, 20-10, on a kill by Savage.
  • The Mustangs closed out the match on a block by Sarah Manderson.

  • Stevenson hit .353 for the match, its highest hitting percentage of the season, while the Bobcats hit at a .149 clip.  
  • Savage had a team-high 10 kills, while Katie Leftridge totaled eight kills and 17 digs.
  • Savage is now 35 kills away from 1,000 for her career.
  • Victoria Prokic recorded kills on all seven of her attacks for a 1.000 hitting percentage.
  • Hileman notched seven kills, 10 digs and four service aces.
  • Caroline Dangel handed out 27 assists, while Emily Castro recorded 11.

Mackenzie Blevins and Chelsea Ireland close out a back-and-forth second set with a block for a 25-21 win.

  • The Mustangs host a tri-match on Saturday, October 13.  Stevenson will face Cabrini at 1 pm and Kean at 5 pm at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
