Mustangs Pick Up 20th Win in Regular Season Finale

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson University women's volleyball team closed out the regular season and extended its win streak to nine matches with a 3-1 win against Stevens at Owings Mills Gymnasium Saturday morning.  Set scores were 20-25, 27-25, 25-16, 25-23.

  • Stevens (22-9) used five straight points to take a 10-7 lead.
  • Up 12-10, the Ducks used another 5-0 run to build a 17-10 lead.
  • Stevenson (20-11) had a 5-0 run of its own with Emily Pellini serving, and after back-to-back kills by Darian Hileman, pulled within 21-19 on a Stevens attack error.
  • The Ducks closed out the set on a 4-1 run to take a 1-0 lead.

  • The Mustangs jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead.
  • Stevens clawed back within one, 13-12, but a service error and a block by Chelsea Ireland and Katie Leftridge put the hosts up 15-12.
  • Stevenson held a 23-19 lead when four straight points by the Ducks tied the set 23-23.
  • Freshman Mackenzie Blevins responded with a kill, but after a Stevens point, Leftridge put the Mustangs up 25-24 with a kill.
  • Back-to-back kills by Ireland and Hileman with the frame knotted 25-25 closed out the second set victory for Stevenson.

  • Five straight Mustang points capped by a block by Ireland and Moriah Savage turned a 5-3 deficit into an 8-5 lead for Stevenson.
  • Stevenson extended its lead to 17-10 following a 5-1 run on which the hosts took advantage of five errors by the Ducks.
  • A Leftridge kill put the Mustangs up 2-1.

  • Stevenson never trailed in the final frame and a Leftridge kill put it up 9-4 early.
  • The Ducks rattled off five straight points to pull within one, 11-10, and tied the set 16-16 on a service ace.
  • A Leftridge kill followed by a Stevens ball handling error put the Mustangs up 18-16.
  • The visitors cut the lead to one five times, the last at 24-23 after a block as the Mustangs were serving for match point.
  • Leftridge's 24th kill of the day closed out the match.

  • Stevenson reached the 20-win mark for the ninth straight season and the 11th time in 12 seasons.
  • The Mustangs' nine-match win streak is its longest of the season.
  • Stevenson hit .209 as a team while the Ducks hit .167.
  • Leftridge hit .420 and totaled a career-high 24 kills and 24 digs to go along with four blocks. 
  • Leftridge's 24 kills were the most in a match by a Mustang this season and the most since Annika Schwartz had 25 against Carnegie Mellon on September 16, 2016.
  • Hileman and Victoria Prokic each finished with 10 kills, while Savage added eight.
  • Ireland had a team-high five blocks.
  • Five Mustangs finished with double-digit digs, with Hileman tallying 14.  Pellini notched 15, while Caroline Dangel and Julie Nightwine finished with 13 and 12, respectively.
  • Dangel handed out 23 assists, while Nightwine had 21.
  • As a team the Mustangs had a season-best 92 digs.

  • Stevenson is back in action Wednesday night when the top-seeded Mustangs host a MAC Commonwealth semifinal at 7 pm.
  • The Mustangs will either face fourth-seeded Messiah or No. 5 seed Widener.
