Mustangs Sweep Messiah, Advance to MAC Commonwealth Title Match

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The top-seeded Stevenson University women's volleyball team advanced to its seventh straight MAC Commonwealth championship match with a 3-0 win over No. 4 seed Messiah College in a conference semifinal Wednesday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium.  Set scores were 25-22, 25-20, 25-21.

  • Stevenson (21-11) held an early 10-7 lead, but five straight points by Messiah (15-16) turned it into a 12-10 advantage for the visitors.
  • With the set knotted at 13, four straight points, including a Caroline Dangel service ace and kills by Darian Hileman and Mackenzie Blevins, put the Mustangs up 17-13.
  • Messiah pulled within one, 19-18, with four straight points of their own, and cut the lead to one two more times.
  • The Mustangs went up 24-21 on a kill by Moriah Savage and after the guests staved off set point, a Hileman kill put Stevenson on top 1-0.

  • Stevenson used five straight points capped by a block by Hileman and Victoria Prokic to build a 13-7 lead.
  • Messiah chipped away and pulled within 15-13 before a 4-1 Mustang run capped by back-to-back kills by Katie Leftridge put the home team on top 19-14.
  • The Falcons countered with a 5-1 run and a Hannah Berger kill pulled Messiah within one, 20-19.
  • Two Savage kills around two Messiah errors increased Stevenson's lead to 24-19, and a Messiah attack error closed out the frame.

  • The Mustangs used a 5-1 spurt to open a 10-6 lead before Messiah came back with five straight points to take an 11-10 lead.
  • Stevenson trailed 16-14 when back-to-back kills by Prokic and Chelsea Ireland tied things at 16.
  • Down 18-17, the hosts rattled off five in a row and a block by Ireland and Hileman pushed Stevenson's lead to four, 22-18.
  • Messiah battled back to within a pair, 23-21, but kills by Savage and Prokic closed out the match.

  • The Mustangs improved their record, including regular season and tournament, against MAC Commonwealth competition to 69-0 since joining the conference.
  • Stevenson hit .143 for the match while holding Messiah to .047 hitting.
  • Savage hit .292 and finished with 12 kills, while Prokic finished with seven and Hileman six.
  • Ireland tallied five kills and five blocks, while Prokic and Savage each had three blocks.
  • Leftridge led the Mustangs in digs with nine, while Sarah Riggin had eight.
  • Julie Nightwine handed out 19 assists, while Dangel finished with 15.
  • Stevenson had a season-low four service errors.
  • Stevenson and Messiah met in the MAC Commonwealth final five straight years from 2012-16.

  • Stevenson faces second-seeded Arcadia in the MAC Commonwealth Championship final on Saturday at 7 pm at Owings Mills Gymnasium.  Arcadia downed third-seeded Lebanon Vallet 3-1 on Wednesday in the other semifinal.
  • The Mustangs downed the Knights 3-1 in the teams' regular season meeting on September 25 at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
  • Saturday's winner earns the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship that kicks off next weekend.
