Mustang Women Place Fifth at Spartan Invitational I

YORK, Pa. - Stevenson had three runners place in the top 30 on Saturday, led by freshman Julie Bekier (Baltimore/Greater Grace Christian Academy) who placed 16th as the Mustangs finished fifth at the Spartan Invitational I hosted by York (Pa.) at John Rudy Park.

A total of five runners competed for Stevenson who totaled 139 points, only 10 behind fourth-place Alvernia.

York won the event with a total of 43 points, 43 ahead of CAC rivals St. Mary's (Md.) and Hood who were separated by just three points with 86 and 89, respectively.

Bekier finished with a time of 23:32.81 which was over a minute faster than her previous 5,000 meter best set last week at the Green Terror Challenge. She finished six spots ahead of senior Brooke Witherow (Berlin/Stephen Decatur) who ran her fastest race of the season, finishing 22nd in a time of 23:59.11, just behind York's Olivia Schleicher who finished in 23:58.47.

Freshman Meghan Najewicz (Baltimore/Perry Hall) competed in her first 5K on Saturday, placing 29th with a time of 24:52.55 after she competed in her first collegiate race last week, placing 19th the 3K at the Green Terror Challenge.

Junior Lauren Redding (Bel Air/C. Milton Wright) continued her improvement, shaving another 20 seconds off of her previous season-best from last week as she posted a time of 25:32.34. Last week, she had a time of 25:51 which was down from her mark of 26:38.76 at the Baltimore Metro Invitational.

A member of the women's golf team at Stevenson, sophomore Aubrey Schneider (Edgewater/St. Mary's) made her collegiate debut on Saturday, finishing 46th in a time of 28:21.41.

Alvernia's Bridget Burger was the top individual finisher with a time of 21:14.89, 14 seconds ahead of York's Melody Parshall.

Stevenson returns to action next week at the Don Cathcart Invitational hosted by Salisbury at Winter Place Park.
