YORK, Pa. – Led by junior Jill Benko (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill), the Mustangs completed their first race at the 6k distance this season at the Coach Achtzehn Classic, hosted by York College, with an eighth place finish.
Benko, who finished the challenging course with a time of 25:52, came in 15th place out of 108 runners.
A little over a minute later, senior Shannon Henretty (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) sprinted her way to the finish with a time of 26:55, placing her in the top 35. Seniors Mary Kate Lutz (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) and Maria Zambuto (Conowingo, Md./Perryville) once again finished seconds apart with times of 28:02 and 28:14, respectively.
Sophomore Lanie Swanhart (Mount Airy, Md./Glenelg) took the fifth spot for the Mustangs by bravely finishing up her race in 29:25, completing the scoring for the squad.
Competing in her first collegiate 6k, sophomore Keeley Cook (Denton, Md./Navy) fought her way through the tough course in 31:36.
Placing two runners in the top three, including race winner Katherine Courier, Goucher College would go on to win the meet with 70 points, just 11 ahead of host York College.
The Mustangs get a week off of competition before they head to the Eastern Shore to compete in the Don Cathcart Invitational, hosted by Salisbury University, on Saturday, September 28.
