INDIANAPOLIS - Three members of the Stevenson University track and field program have qualified to compete at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship May 23-25 at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. Sophomore Dereck Davis qualified for the men's 100-meter dash, junior Kimberly Hammond qualified to compete in the women's long jump, and junior Patrick Watson qualified in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
Davis qualified in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.61 seconds at the Morgan State Legacy meet on April 19 and is seeded No. 17 among 20 competitors. Davis also qualified this winter for the NCAA indoor track and field championship in the 60-meter dash. The 100-meter dash prelims are set for Friday, May 24 at 3:30 pm, with the final taking place Saturday, May 25 at 1:40 pm.
Hammond qualified in the long jump by winning this week's AARTFC Championship with a school-record leap of 5.90 meters, tying her for the No. 2 mark nationally. She also competed this winter at indoor nationals in the long jump. The women's long jump competition is set for Thursday, May 23 at 5:00 pm.
Watson qualifies for track and field nationals for the first time, but is a two-time qualifier in cross country, taking All-America honors this past November by finishing 15th. He qualified in the steeplechase with a program-record time of 9:09.75 at the Larry Ellis Invitational on April 20. The 3000-meter steeplechase preliminaries are set for Thursday, May 23 at 5:50 pm, with the final slated for Saturday at 11:45 am.
