Mustangs Win In-State Clash With Seahawks

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Stevenson field hockey team used a second-half goal from senior Sara McVey and two saves from junior Kelsey Eure to blank the host Saint Mary's College of Maryland by a final of 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at JLR Turf Field.

  • It took eight minutes to see the first shot of the game when junior Ashli Glatfelter had her attempt blocked by the Seahawks (1-1) defense.
  • St. Mary's had their best chance of the opening half with ten minutes off the clock as Hannah Dietrich blasted one at Eure who made the first of her two saves.
  • The Mustangs (2-0) put the pressure on Seahawks keeper Kelbey Egerland when McVey ripped one at the cage that she was able to push away.  Then, back-to-back penalty corner opportunities amounted to not much as the visitors could not find a shot on the chances.
  • There would not be another shot the rest of the half as shots would finish even at 2-2, with each goalie making a save.

  • Stevenson got the only goal of the contest just 1:35 into half number two when McVey found herself in the attack area and stashed one behind Egerland making it 1-0.
  • The Seahawks looked to knot things up in the 39th-minute when Brooke Steinhoff sent a shot wide of goal and then just nine-seconds later Jessica Zhang caused Eure to make her second stop.
  • Then in the 47th-minute, St. Mary's had three consecutive corners but only could muster one shot.  However, that solo attempt off the stick of Meghan Ronan got behind Eure but rang the post keeping it 1-0.
  • After, that scare off the pipe the Mustangs went on the attack in search of an insurance goal, but three chances for McVey could not find a breakthrough as one was blocked, one was denied by Egerland, and the final offering was cleared off the line by Steinhoff.
  • McVey would have one more chance to close the game, unfortunately, in the 66th-minute she turned away by Egerland once more.  This time the rebound kicked out to freshman Gracyn Colborn who skipped the final shot of the afternoon wide.
  • Stevenson carried the play in the second half outshooting St. Mary's, 7-3 and 9-5 for the game.
