OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's basketball senior Erik Fisher recorded his seventh career double double with 17 points and 10 rebounds but the Mustangs dropped their season opener to former CAC rival York (Pa.), 59-47, Friday evening at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
It is the first season opening loss for the Mustangs (0-1) in four seasons as they fall to 3-2 in the last five years. It was also the first home opening loss for the team since the 2011-12 season.
Throughout the first five minutes, the Spartans (1-0) gained a 6-0 advantage before sophomore Sean Mayberry converted on a jump shot to end the drought. Mayberry had the team's first six points to help spark a 7-0 run by the Mustangs to tie the game at 13 with 7:40 left.
Fisher and Mayberry combined for 15 of Stevenson's 23 first half points while junior Ryan Hill controlled the glass, pulling down six rebounds. Hill finished the game with eight rebounds.
Following a layup to open the second half by Fisher to get the Mustangs within two, York scored eight of the next 10 points to extend its lead back to six.
Stevenson saw itself down by as many as eight before Roberts sparked a 7-0 run after hitting a three-pointer to bring the Mustangs within one 35-34 with 13:38 remaining. Roberts scored all of his eight points in the second half after committing two early fouls in the first.
Mayberry finished an and-one fast-break lay up with just over five minutes in the second half to cut the Spartans lead to three, but the York answered with back-to-back baskets to extend the lead eight.
The Spartans were 9-for-10 from the free throw line in the final three minutes.
The Mustangs shot just 29 percent from the field, including going 1-for-18 from three-point range. Meanwhile, York shot 46.5 percent from the field and converted on 15 of their 20 free-throw attempts.
Mayberry went 6-for-13 from the field and totaled 14 points to go along with seven rebounds. The Mustangs starters scored 43 of the team's 47 points.
