Early Second-Half Barrage Moves Hood Past Mustangs on Senior Night

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Hood knocked down six straight three-pointers in the first three minutes of the second half as part of a 20-2 run and the Blazers downed Stevenson 90-74 in MAC Commonwealth men's basketball Tuesday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

  • The first seven minutes saw five lead changes before Hood (16-8, 10-5 MAC Commonwealth) eked out an 11-8 lead at the 13:01 mark.
  • The Blazers used back-to-back threes by Ian Eversull to build a 19-13 lead at the midway point of the first half.
  • Stevenson (14-10, 8-7 MAC Commonwealth) countered with a 9-0 run and a layup by Montaque Wright at the 7:45 mark put the Mustangs up by three, 22-19.
  • A 7-0 Hood run put the guests up four, 26-22, 6:29 before intermission.
  • Taj Fleming's layup 1:26 before halftime tied the game for the fifth time in the half, 36-36.
  • Evan Wang's three as time expired in the first half put the Blazers up 39-36.

  • Hood made seven of its first eight shots from the floor, including 6-of-6 on threes, to open on a 20-2 run and build a 59-38 lead at the 17:11 mark.
  • The Mustangs scored the next four points to get the lead down to 17, 59-42.
  • The Blazers took their largest lead, 70-46, with 12:08 to play on a three by Jared Ruiz.
  • Stevenson chipped away and a conventional three-point play by Marcus Dentley at the 9:50 mark pulled the Mustangs back within 17, 71-54.
  • The hosts cut the lead to 17 two more times, and a three by Johnny Rhodes with 3:41 remaining made it an 81-66 game, but the Mustangs got no closer the rest of the way.

  • Hood was 11-19 from three over the final 20 minutes and shot 54.8% overall from the floor in the second half and 46.9% for the game.
  • The Mustangs shot 51.7% in the second half and 47.5% for the contest, but were 7-22 from three, while Hood went 19-43 behind the arc.
  • Stevenson held a 40-36 rebounding advantage.
  • The Blazers turned the Mustangs over 23 times, leading to a 36-11 advantage in points off turnovers.
  • Mark Terrell paced four Stevenson players in double figures with 15 points while also grabbing seven rebounds.
  • Rhodes notched 14 points and five boards, while Dentley was 6-8 from the floor and had 13 points.
  • Walt English matched his career high with 10 points, knocking down a pair of three-pointers.
  • Wright flirted with a triple-double, recording nine points, 10 assists and seven rebounds.
  • Hood's win, combined with Widener downing previously unbeaten in conference play Arcadia Tuesday night, means the Mustangs will be either the No. 4 or 5 seed in next week's MAC Commonwealth Championship and will play a first-round game Monday, February 18.
  • Prior to the game, the Mustangs honored seniors Dentley, English, Rhodes and Wright.

  • The Mustangs close out the regular season Saturday afternoon, traveling to Albright for a 3:00 MAC Commonwealth contest.
  • The MAC Commonwealth Men's Basketball Championship kicks off next Monday, February 18 with the No. 4 vs No. 5 game.  The Mustangs will have their final seed determined after Saturday's games.
