WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Junior Andre Sturniolo, senior Douglas Vaughan and freshman Larry Johnson III each advanced to the their respective championship match at the MAC Individual Championships, hosted by King's (Pa.) and Wilkes. The Mustangs made it to the finals in five of the 11 events, including a win in the No. 4 doubles championship, setting a new school record for finals appearances.
Sturniolo was only down by a 4-3 score in the No. 2 singles championship before having to retire from the match, giving the win to Jan Senkerik of Manhattanville. Sturniolo won his opening round match by a 6-0, 6-1 score over Lycoming before winning in the quarterfinals against King's College, 6-2, 7-5. To reach the final, Sturniolo took down Justin Schuetz of Lebanon Valley in straight sets by a 6-4, 6-2 score.
Vaughan dropped a hard-fought match in the No. 5 singles final by a 6-4, 6-4 score to top-seeded Jack Maline of Wilkes. Vaughan won in straight-sets over DeSales in the quarterfinal, 6-4, 6-2. Vaughan would then cruise to a 6-1, 6-3 win against Arcadia to reach the final.
Johnson won the opening set over Ahmad Kanan of DeSales, but would eventually fall in the next two sets, 6-3, 10-3. Johnson was dominant in the first two matches of his first career MAC Championship, taking down Cody Fitzwater of Messiah in straight sets by a 6-0, 6-2 score. In the semi's, Johnson won in straight sets over King's, 6-2, 6-4.
Junior Drew Ryan was victorious in his No. 3 singles quarterfinal matche against Messiah, 7-5, 6-1, but would then fall to Alex Fleischman of Manhattanville in the semi's by 6-1, 6-3 margin.
Host Wilkes won individual championships in eight of the 11 events.
This tournament marks the end of the fall season for the Mustangs. The spring season gets underway on Saturday, March 30 when the Mustangs play at Lebanon Valley
