Men's Tennis Dominates Catholic in Season Opener

STEVENSON, Md. - The defending MAC Commonwealth champion Stevenson men's tennis team dominated visiting Catholic by an 8-1 margin in its fall season opener at the Greenspring Tennis Courts. 

Senior Ray McDermott and freshman Larry Johnson III teamed up to take their No. 1 doubles match by a score of 8-3, while senior Andre Sturniolo and junior Richie Abruscato opened up their season with an 8-2 rout of their No. 2 opponents. 

Sophomore Lukas Sanidas and freshman Chad Smialek completed the doubles sweep in No. 3, taking their match by an 8-3 score. 

Sturniolo won his third-straight match, dating back to last season, in a 6-2, 6-1 straight-set victory over his No. 1 opponent.

McDermott won his No. 2 match in straight sets by a 6-3, 6-2 score, while Johnson won his sixth straight in singles, 6-1, 6-1. 

Sanidas picked up his third-straight victory in No. 4, 6-1, 6-1. 

Abruscato overcame a one-set deficit to take down his No. 5 opponent, 4-6, 7-6 (10-3), 10-7.

Smialek dropped a tough match in No. 6, falling to his opponent by a 5-7, 6-1, 11-9 margin. 

This is the Mustangs' lone team match scheduled for the fall season. Stevenson competes next in the ITA Regional tournament, hosted by the University of Mary Washington, starting on Friday, October 4.
