Men's Tennis Competes in Opening Day of ITA Regional Championships

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Stevenson men's tennis team opened up play in the ITA Regional Tennis Championships, hosted by Mary Washington.

Senior Ray McDermott overtook Blake Martin of Lebanon Valley in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, in the round of 16 in his B4 singles draw. However, McDermott would lose a heartbreaker in the quarterfinal by a score of 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (10-5). 

Senior Andre Sturniolo, who competed in the Championship singles draw, dropped his opening round match in straight sets to his opponent from Christopher Newport.

McDermott and sophomore Larry Johnson III fell in their round of 32 match in the Championship doubles draw by an 8-1 margin.

Sophomore Lukas Sanidas and freshman Paulo Gonzal fell in the quarterfinals of their B2 Doubles match to Nicholas Balaci and Reed Morris of Lebanon Valley by an 8-3 score. 

Several Mustangs will take part in consolation draws of the tournament on Saturday, October 5.
