WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Stevenson men's tennis team advanced to the semifinals in seven of the 11 draws at the MAC Individual Championships, hosted by Wilkes and King's College.
Senior Andre Sturniolo won his opening-round No. 1 singles match in dominating fashion over Cole Patti of Eastern by a 6-0, 6-0 score. Sturniolo would then win the opening set of his quarterfinal match in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7), before taking the second set by a 6-3 score to advance to Sunday's semifinal.
Senior Ray McDermott cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win in the opening round of No. 2 singles over Reid Hoff of Alvernia. In the quarterfinal, second-seeded McDermott overcame a one-set deficit to take the match 0-6, 6-2, 10-4.
Sophomore Larry Johnson III took his opening round matchup in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, over third-seeded Will Pollick of DeSales. Johnson would also take his quarterfinal match in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (2).
Sophomore Lukas Sanidas, who was part of last year's No. 4 doubles team (Peter Appiah Jr.) that won the program's first MAC Individual Championship, took down his No. 4 singles opponent from Alvernia by a 6-2, 6-2 score. In the quarters, Sanidas earned a commanding 6-1, 6-0 win over Arcadia to advance to the semis.
Junior Richie Abruscato cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory to open up play in No. 5 singles. Fourth-seeded Abruscato would also take his quarterfinal match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
In No. 1 doubles, second-seeded McDermott and Johnson picked up a solid 8-3 win over DeSales. The duo would then win an 8-7 (7) thriller over Alvernia to move onto the semis.
Sanidas and freshman Chad Smialek opened up No. 3 doubles with an 8-5 victory over DeSales. In the quarters, the tandem would win a hard-fought 8-7 (5) match over FDU-Florham.
The semifinals are set to begin on Sunday, October 13 at 9:00 a.m.
