REISTERSTOWN, Md. - For the second time in the last three games and fifth time in her career, Stevenson women's ice hockey junior Chelsea Blackburn netted a hat trick as the Mustangs finished a home-and-home sweep over Lebanon Valley, 5-0, Saturday evening at Reisterstown Sportsplex.
It is the fifth shutout for the Mustangs (9-5-0) this season as they have won five of their last six games by a combined score of 29-5. The team has won 14 of its last 16 home games and is unbeaten in 17 of its last 19 dating back to the 2014-15 season.
Three different scorers netted a goal for the hosts in the opening period, including the first strike by junior Allie Bruns on an assist from classmate Monica Pozuc just 3:36 into the contest. Bruns, who totaled just six points in her first two season, has recorded six in the last three games.
Meanwhile, Pozuc has tallied a point in five of the last seven games and in nine of the 14 overall.
Pozuc scored her third goal in the last five games exactly five minutes after Bruns' tally to make it 2-0 before Blackburn made it 3-0 with 5:14 remaining.
Both teams finished 0-for-3 on the power-play in the opening period. The Mustangs finished 0-for-6 in the game while the Dutchmen (2-10-0) went 0-for-3 on the player advantage.
With 4:18 remaining in the second period, Blackburn connected with her linesmates, Pozuc and sophomore Maddy Ricci to extend the hosts lead to 4-0. The trio has combined for 21 points in the last three games and a plus-38 rating.
Blackburn completed her hat trick just 3:48 into the third period on assists from the defensive pair of Bruns and freshman Carly McGee. Blackburn is now just one point shy of tying the all-time program record of 79 points set by McKenzie Taggart '16.
The Mustangs, who outshot Lebanon Valley 84-7, improved to 21-0-0 under head coach Tracy Johnson when scoring five or more goals in a game.
Sophomore Caitie Darosa got the start in net and totaled five saves before giving way to freshman Brittany Rose who finished with two. The Dutchmen were led in net by Jillian Moffit who recorded 79 saves.
Stevenson returns to action on Friday, January 13 when the Mustangs face No. 6 Middlebury in a non-conference contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
