OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Bridget Kenny and Loren Pruitt combined to score nine goals as No. 6 Gettysburg outshot the No. 19-ranked Stevenson women's lacrosse team 31-22, including 19-9 in the first half, en route to a 15-6 victory Wednesday at Mustang Stadium.
The Mustangs (0-1) dropped their third-straight season opener after winning three-straight from 2009-11. The game also featured the first meeting between the two schools.
However, the Bullets (1-0) scored eight of the next nine goals, including three by Kenny, before senior Marissa Meiklejohn scored two minutes before the half as Gettysburg led 8-3 at halftime.
The Mustangs cut the deficit to five with 11:10 remaining in the second half after a goal by Merrick on an assist from Wagner. Yet, Gettysburg scored the games final four goals, including a goal by both Kenny and Pruitt.
Merrick finished with four points on one goal and three assists while Wagner totaled three points with two goals and one assist.
Sophomore Jordan Porretto totaled a game-high six ground balls and three caused turnovers in her first game with the team.
The Bullets won 19 of the 23 draw controls while Stevenson was 18-for-25 on clear attempts including just 6-for-13 in the first half.
Junior Leanne Bittner totaled six saves while her counterpart Shannon Keeler finished with 10.
The Mustangs return to action on Saturday, February 22 when they host No. 1 Salisbury at Mustang Stadium beginning at 1:00 p.m.
