Prokic Breaks Career Block Record, Mustangs Sweep Tri-Match

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson senior Victoria Prokic became the program's all-time leader in blocks in Saturday's first match as the Mustangs took both ends of a non-conference women's volleyball tri-match with Washington (Md.) College and Misericordia Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium by 3-1 scores.

  • Set scores were 22-25, 25-7, 25-13, 25-10.
  • In the first set, Washington (7-9) scored six straight points to open a 21-11 lead.
  • Stevenson (15-0) scored the next points, but the Shorewomen countered with the next three to serve for the set up 24-15.
  • After a Katie Leftridge kill, Kayla Vaeth served six straight points as the Mustangs moved within two, 24-22, following Prokic's record-breaking block with Shannon Baily.  Vaeth had a pair of service aces in the run, but a serve error ended the set.
  • The Mustangs held Washington to negative hitting in each of the next three sets, including -.261 in the second (1-7-23)., while the Mustangs hit .367 in the third and .325 over the final three frames and .300 for the match.
  • Leftridge hit .433 and totaled 16 kills and seven digs.
  • Prokic recorded 11 kills and a pair of blocks, hitting .625.
  • Freshmen Baily and Simone Gest had nine and eight kills, respectively.
  • Caroline Dangel had 19 assists and seven digs, while Julie Nightwine had 17 assists and 10 digs.
  • Vaeth had 11 assists and nine digs to go along with three service aces.
  • Darian Hileman had a team-high 12 digs.
  • Freshman Haley Hoover had six blocks (one solo).

  • Set scores were 25-17, 25-17, 23-25, 25-17.
  • Stevenson scored the final six points of the first set to close out the set win on a Prokic kill.
  • The Mustangs took control of the second set with five straight points to go up 16-12.
  • Misericordia (13-9) scored five of the final six points in the third to overcome a 22-20 deficit.
  • The hosts scored the match's final four points and a kill by Gest closed things out.
  • Gest hit .458 and had 12 kills, while Leftridge finished with 11 and Prokic 10.
  • Prokic hit .750 against Misericordia.
  • Haley Hoover totaled eight blocks and five kills.
  • Dangel and Nightwine each totaled 20 assists.
  • Vaeth had a team-high 11 digs.
  • Stevenson hit .349 for the match while Misericordia hit .162.

  • Prokic now has 360 career blocks, surpassing the old program mark of 356.
  • Stevenson remains one of three unbeaten teams in Division III, with Johns Hopkins and Tufts the others.
  • The Mustangs have now won 17 straight at Owings Mills Gymnasium dating back to last season.
  • Head coach Dave Trumbo won career match No. 350 against Misericordia.  He is 350-94 (.788) in his 13th season.

  • Stevenson travels to Arcadia on Tuesday, October 1 for a 7 pm MAC Commonwealth match in a rematch of the last two conference title matches.
  • The Mustangs return home Tuesday, October 8, hosting Elizabethtown in a 7 pm match at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
